Summer 2023 Newsletter: Zen & Bodywork Training

Zen & Bodywork Training, by Geraldine Abergas

In early April, we hosted a group of local bodyworkers for an inaugural Zen & Bodywork training led by myself, alongside an old time Dojo member and student of Tanouye Rotaishi, Donna Punzal.

For a full 24-hour immersion, the group trained in basic Zen principles and techniques through Zazen, Hara development, and Swordsmanship. None of the participants had been to the Dojo or trained in Zen before, so they all truly came with Beginner’s Mind. In addition to Zazen and Hojo, they spent time clearing out the gas kiln shed to make way for the new boxing training space. Afterward, the group went on a hike up the Kalihi Stream, putting their Hara training to practical use.

Sayama Roshi joined the training and led a talk on "Bodywork as a Way to Become a True Human Being". He encouraged us to look at how bodywork can be treated as a Do, or a Way. The participants walked away with a deeper appreciation of the work they do, how they are of service to others, and how what ultimately matters most is the cultivation of Self and our kia’i.

Since the workshop, participants have joined the Chozen-ji community, coming to Zazen and workdays. Donna and I are very much looking forward to our next Zen & Bodywork training scheduled for this coming October.
